Shanghai Plastics Research Institute was established in 1963. It is an institute established foremost in our country for plastics processing and application research . It was established for the demand of national defence and military industry, specialized chiefly in the processing of fluoro-containing materials. For a long term, a complete set of fluoro-plastics processing technology such as moulding, hydraulic pressing, extrusion, blowing, expanding, impregnating, lamination, filling, weaving, welding, spraying and surface treatment is formed. For thirty or more years, Shanghai Plastics Research Institute achieved prosperous results in application research of military research projects and the combination of military and domestic projects. Large amounts of new, excellent fluoro-plastics products have been provided for national defence and military units and research institutes. 142 projects were passed appraisals and many projects were awarded the prizes of National Defence Science Commission, National Military Commission, National Science and Technology Advancement, Chemical Science and Technology of Ministry of Chemical Industry, Important Scientific and Research Results of Shanghai Municipality, Scientific and Technological Results of Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Chemical Industry, National Science Conference, etc. Among them, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) Hose Assembly used in aerospace was awarded the third class prize of National Defence Scientific and Research Results and we are now a base site for research, manufacture and tests of military PTFE Hose Assembly. Polyvinyl Butyral (PVB) sheet has developed its applications from seat cabin glass of interceptor fighter to the window glass of locomotive and car. The PTFE and fluoroinated ethylene propylene (FEP) products researched and produced by our institute have been widely used in tip military industries as satellite, guided missile, atomic energy, aerospace, etc. and in domestic industries as electronics, electric appliances, machinery, chemical, textile, construction, construction materials, etc. We also gained large achievements in management and was denominated "Shanghai Plastics Quality Supervision and Testing Station" by Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Technology Supervision in 1983, was denominated the first "Municipality Class Advanced Unit of Archives Management of Institution" in 1990 and had been approved "Shanghai New and High Technology Enterprise" in 1993 till now.

　　There are five research apartments, a hi-tech new product development center and a Shanghai Plastics Quality Supervision and Testing Station in our institute.

　　Shanghai Plastics Research Institute shall stride into the 21st century with an entirely new aspect under the reform and opening policy and the reconstruction of economic structure.
